Set during World War II, Catch-22 is a darkly comedic novel that follows the story of Captain John Yossarian and his experiences as a bombardier in the US Army Air Forces. Yossarian is desperate to avoid flying more missions, but he's trapped in a bureaucratic Catch-22 where the only way to avoid flying is to be declared insane. However, requesting to be declared insane is considered rational, and therefore proves one's sanity. The novel is a critique of war and the military, highlighting the absurdity and contradictions of the system. With its non-linear narrative structure and dark humour, Catch-22 has become a classic of modern literature and a cultural touchstone.
