Many New Zealanders have a surveyor or two in their family tree but very little has been written about the literally hundreds of surveyors who were working in New Zealand in the nineteenth century. Their job was manifold, being explorer, architect, town planner, road maker, engineer, and administrator. They were often faced with inaccessible forests, snow-clad mountains, fearsome rivers or native resistance. Caught Mapping is a social history, embroidered with domestic incident and the colour of the days.
