Autobiographical in form, this book gives an inside story of hill country farming in New Zealand. The reader is shown something of the fascination of 'station' life from the point of view of a young man who first works as a high country shepherd in the mountain tussock country of the South Island, and then becomes a 'runholder' himself. The author then gives a brief but lively account of the highlights of three years army service, most of it with Allenby's mounted troops in Palestine.
