John Gully (1819-1888) was a major colonial water-colour artist whose paintings have become part of New Zealand's art heritage.

This volume, an illustrated biography, has been compiled by his great-great-grandson, John Sidney Gully. It was as much a labour of love as a researched document. It tells the reader the artist's story from his birth at Bath to his death in Nelson in November 1888.

In addition to the personal details the volume includes a comprehensive catalogue of all known works by John Gully. This includes lists of original watercolours, sketches and prints held privately or in public museums, art galleries and libraries. The reader is guided by the entry of each work by Title with further reference to locality and date, when known.

There is a chapter on the methods and techniques of John Gully and an essay evaluating his work.

Enhanced by 60 full colour plates and 68 black and white reproductions, New Zealand's Romantic Landscape, Paintings by John Gully adds significantly to New Zealand colonial art literature.

Condition: good. Some spotting and creasing. Ex-library copy. Covered with protective plastic. Hardcover.
