From the early years of this century most Pakeha writers on pre-contact Maori history have accepted the following as a short statement of the Maori settlement of New Zealand: circa AD 925 Kupe left Hawaiki and "discovered" this country before returning to his homeland; circa 1150 Toi and Whatonga led the first migration from Hawaiki and settled in New Zealand; circa 1350 some six large canoes, constituting a "Great Fleet", sailed from Hawaiki and founded the tribal structure on which the modern Maori tribal pattern is based.
This, in outline, is what David Simmons now describes as the "Great New Zealand Myth", and in this book he relates how he came to enquire into its validity.
